 Product Description

Activated charcoal, also known as activated carbon, is a highly porous and adsorbent substance that has a wide range of applications across various industries and in the field of medicine. This remarkable material is produced by heating carbon-rich sources, such as wood, peat, coconut shells, or sawdust, in the absence of air, which results in a porous structure with a high surface area.

Application of Activated charcoal :

    • Water Purification: Activated charcoal is widely used to remove impurities and contaminants from drinking water. It can adsorb chlorine, sediment, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and various other organic and inorganic compounds, improving the taste and quality of water.

    • Air Purification: Activated charcoal is used in air filters to remove odors and pollutants. It is effective in adsorbing volatile organic compounds, such as those found in paint fumes and indoor air pollutants.

    • Industrial Processes: Various industries use activated charcoal for purification and separation processes. For example, it is used in the food and beverage industry to decolorize and purify liquids, such as sugar syrups and alcoholic beverages.

    • Poison and Drug Overdose Treatment: Activated charcoal is administered orally in medical settings to treat cases of poisoning or drug overdose. It works by adsorbing toxic substances in the stomach, preventing their absorption into the bloodstream.

    • Digestive Health: In over-the-counter products, activated charcoal is used as a dietary supplement for digestive health. Some people take it to alleviate symptoms of bloating and gas.

    • Skin Care: Activated charcoal is a popular ingredient in skincare products, such as face masks and cleansers. It is believed to help remove impurities from the skin by adsorbing excess oil and toxins.

Side Effects of Activated Charcoal

    • Activated charcoal is generally well-tolerated. Several studies have demonstrated its successful application for gastrointestinal decontamination in emergency cases.

    • However, common side effects such as nausea and vomiting exist. These can be attributed to the coarse texture of the liquid mixture of activated charcoal. Nausea and vomiting can become more profound when the patient is in a semi-conscious state due to the poisoning.

    • Scientists have also claimed many instances of side effects to having occurred due to the residual toxic impurities of the improperly processed or home-made activated charcoal.

    • Moreover, activated charcoal may result in adverse effects if aspirated into the lungs. It is then important to ensure that the nasogastric tube is positioned properly. To do this, a chest X-ray is usually recommended to ensure that the tube is not in the lungs.

    • Activated charcoal is not effective in the treatment of poisoning related to substances such as corrosive acids, alkalis, hydrocarbons, alcohol, boric acid and heavy metals such as lead, potassium, lithium, and iron compounds.
