Potassium Permanganate Solution
Potassium Permanganate Solution is often used in a variety
of applications, and the concentration will depend on the intended use (e.g.,
for laboratory, disinfecting, or medical purposes).
Preparation of Potassium Permanganate Solution:
Steps for Preparation:
Materials:
- Potassium
permanganate crystals (KMnO₄)
- Distilled
water
- A
500 mL volumetric flask or a 500 mL beaker
- A
balance to weigh the KMnO₄ crystals
- A
stirring rod or magnetic stirrer
Procedure:
- Weigh
the potassium permanganate:
- Determine
the molarity (M) or mass concentration (g/L) of the solution you need.
- For
example, if you want a 0.1 M KMnO₄ solution:
- Molar
mass of KMnO₄ = 158.04 g/mol
- For
0.1 M solution: 0.1 mol/L × 158.04 g/mol = 15.804 g/L
- For
500 mL (0.5 L): 15.804 g/L × 0.5 L = 7.902 g
- Dissolve
the potassium permanganate:
- Measure
7.902 g (or the amount appropriate for your concentration) of KMnO₄ using
the balance.
- Transfer
the potassium permanganate crystals into a beaker.
- Add
a small amount (about 100-200 mL) of distilled water to the beaker.
- Stir
the mixture using a stirring rod or magnetic stirrer until the KMnO₄
dissolves completely. It may take some time, as potassium permanganate is
not very soluble, but with stirring, it should dissolve.
- Transfer
to a 500 mL volumetric flask:
- After
the KMnO₄ has dissolved, transfer the solution into a 500 mL volumetric
flask.
- Rinse
the beaker with distilled water and pour the rinsings into the volumetric
flask to ensure all of the KMnO₄ is transferred.
- Dilute
to volume:
- Add
distilled water to the volumetric flask slowly until the solution reaches
the 500 mL mark. Make sure you are at eye level to accurately measure the
meniscus.
- If
you’re using a beaker and not a volumetric flask, ensure you dilute the
solution to the correct volume by adding water gradually.
- Mix
the solution:
- Cap
the flask and invert it several times to thoroughly mix the solution.
