Methyl Isobutyl Ketone (MIBK) is a colorless, flammable liquid with a distinct, sweet, ketone-like odor. It is a medium-volatility solvent that is slightly soluble in water but highly miscible with most organic solvents. MIBK is commonly produced through the condensation of acetone.

Uses:

  1. Industrial Solvent:

    • Coatings & Paints: Used as a solvent in surface coatings, lacquers, and paints due to its excellent solvent power and slow evaporation rate.
    • Adhesives & Inks: Provides smooth application and enhances drying in printing inks and adhesives.
    • Rubber Industry: Acts as an extraction solvent and processing aid in rubber manufacturing.

  2. Chemical Intermediate:

    • Used in the production of rubber antioxidants, plasticizers, and other chemical intermediates.

  3. Extraction Agent:

    • Applied in the purification of pharmaceuticals, rare metals, and uranium enrichment processes due to its selective extraction properties.
