Barium Carbonate – বেরিয়াম কার্বনেট


Barium carbonate is a white, odorless, heavy, and crystalline inorganic compound. It occurs naturally as the mineral witherite and is produced commercially through the reaction of barium sulfide with sodium carbonate. It is insoluble in water but soluble in acids.

  1. Ceramic Industry:

    • Acts as a flux, matting, and crystallizing agent in glazes.
    • Prevents scumming in bricks and tiles caused by soluble salts.

  2. Glass Manufacturing:

    • Used to improve refractive index and optical properties in specialty glass.

  3. Chemical Industry:

    • Precursor in the production of barium-based chemicals like barium ferrite and barium titanate.
    • Neutralizes acidic wastewater in industrial processes.

  4. Fireworks & Explosives:

    • Provides a bright green color in pyrotechnic displays.

  5. Water Treatment:

    • Removes sulfates from water in the treatment process.

  6. Other Applications:

    • Used in the production of electrodes, magnets, and ferrite materials.
    • Acts as a rodenticide, though this use is limited due to its toxicity.
