                                         Aluminum Oxide  -  1 Kg

Description :

Aluminum Oxide, also known as Alumina, is a chemical compound of aluminum and oxygen with the formula Al2O3. It presents as a white, odorless, non-reactive, and highly stable solid, typically supplied in a crystalline granular or powdered form. In its most common crystalline phase (), it is known as corundum, which is exceptionally hard—scoring 9 on the Mohs scale—making it just slightly softer than diamond.

Industrial grade alumina has varying degrees of purity and is often optimized for bulk properties like hardness and refractory performance.

Laboratory grade alumina is generally supplied at a higher purity, sometimes specially treated (e.g., activated alumina) to optimize its surface area, porosity, and chemical neutrality for analytical work.

Uses :

  1. Production Feedstock: It is the main raw material used to produce aluminum metal through the Hall-Héroult process.
  2. Abrasives: Used extensively in materials like sandpaper, grinding wheels, cutting pads, blasting media, and polishing compounds due to its superior hardness.

  3. Refractories and Ceramics: Manufactured into refractory bricks, kiln linings, furnace tubes, and crucibles due to its resistance to high heat and chemical corrosion.

  4. Engineered Ceramics: Used to create advanced ceramic components with high wear resistance, such as ballistic armor plates, high-performance cutting tool inserts, and wear-resistant pump parts.

  5. Chromatography Media: Used as a stationary phase adsorbent in column chromatography to separate chemical mixtures, available in neutral, acidic, or basic forms.

  6. Catalyst/Catalyst Support: Highly porous forms (activated alumina) serve as a high-surface-area support material for precious metal catalysts in various chemical reactions .

  3. Desiccating Agent: Activated alumina is used to remove water vapor (desiccate) from gases and liquids in drying tubes and purification trains.

  4. Analytical Standard: High-purity powder is used in chemical and materials laboratories as a standard material for thermal analysis (e.g., TGA, DTA) and for preparing custom reagents.

  5. Specialty Labware: Used to manufacture high-ppurity crucibles and furnace tubes that must withstand extreme temperatures and avoid material contamination during testing.
