Cowbell Lactometer for Milk Purity Testing Made in India

The Cowbell Lactometer is a precision glass instrument used to check the purity of milk by measuring its specific gravity (density). It helps detect if water has been added or if cream has been removed.

Uses :

  • Prepare: Fill a tall cylinder or jar with fresh milk.

  • Insert: Gently lower the lactometer into the milk. Let it float freely without touching the sides or bottom.

  • Read: Once it stops moving, note the reading where the milk surface touches the scale.

  • Optimal Temp: For best results, test milk at 20°C to 27°C.

Understanding the Results

  • Pure Milk: The reading should be between 28 and 32.

  • Watered Milk: A reading below 26 indicates water has been added.

  • Skimmed Milk: A reading above 32 suggests the cream has been removed or solids were added to thicken it.

Maintenance: Always wash with clean water and dry carefully after each use to maintain accuracy.

  1. Material: High-quality borosilicate glass.
  2. Design: Weighted bulb at the bottom to float upright and a graduated scale on the stem.

  3. Principle: Based on Archimedes' principle; it sinks deeper in less dense (watered-down) milk.
