Butanol – বিউটানল

Butanol, also known as butyl alcohol, is an organic compound with the chemical formula C₄H₉OH. It exists in four isomeric forms:

  1. n-Butanol (1-butanol)
  2. sec-Butanol (2-butanol)
  3. isobutanol (2-methyl-1-propanol)
  4. tert-Butanol (2-methyl-2-propanol)

Each isomer has distinct properties, but n-butanol and isobutanol are the most commonly used in industrial applications. Butanol is a clear, colorless liquid with a characteristic alcohol-like odor. It is moderately soluble in water and miscible with most organic solvents.

Uses of Butanol:

  1. Industrial Solvent:

    • Used in the production of paints, coatings, varnishes, and inks due to its excellent solvency.
    • Acts as a solvent for resins, dyes, fats, oils, waxes, and plasticizers.

  2. Chemical Intermediate:

    • A precursor in the manufacture of butyl acrylate, butyl acetate, and other esters.
    • Used in the production of pharmaceuticals, plasticizers, and rubber chemicals.

  3. Fuel and Energy:

    • Used as a biofuel or blended with gasoline to enhance fuel efficiency.
    • Has potential as a renewable energy source due to its higher energy content compared to ethanol.

  4. Personal Care and Cosmetics:

    • Found in products like perfumes, lotions, and cosmetics as a solvent or carrier.

    • Commonly used in biological and chemical laboratories for extractions and reactions.
