Methanol for lab grade
Lab-grade methanol, also known as laboratory-grade methanol or analytical reagent-grade methanol, is a high-purity chemical used extensively in scientific research and industrial applications. Here are some of its primary uses:
Solvent:
- Chromatography: Methanol is commonly used as a solvent in high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and gas chromatography (GC).
- Spectroscopy: It's used as a solvent in various spectroscopic techniques, including UV-Vis, NMR, and IR spectroscopy.
- Chemical Reactions: Methanol acts as a solvent in various chemical reactions and syntheses due to its ability to dissolve a wide range of compounds.
Reagent:
- Synthetic Chemistry: Methanol is used as a reagent in organic synthesis, including methylation reactions and the preparation of formaldehyde.
- Grignard Reactions: It can be used in the preparation and quenching of Grignard reagents.
Cleaning Agent:
- Lab Equipment: Methanol is used to clean laboratory glassware and instruments because of its high volatility and ability to dissolve residues.
- Degreasing: It is effective in removing grease and oil from surfaces and equipment.
Sample Preparation:
- Extraction: Methanol is used for the extraction of compounds from biological and environmental samples.
- Fixation: It serves as a fixative in histology and cytology for tissue and cell sample preparation.
Spectroscopy:
- UV-Vis Spectroscopy: Methanol is often used as a solvent for preparing samples in UV-Vis spectroscopy due to its transparency in the UV range.
- NMR Spectroscopy: Deuterated methanol (CD3OD) is used as a solvent in NMR spectroscopy to provide a deuterium signal for locking and to minimize background signals from the solvent.

Methanol, also known as methyl alcohol, amongst other names, is a chemical and the simplest alcohol with the formula CH3OH (a methyl group linked to a hydroxyl group, often abbreviated MeOH). It is a light, volatile, colourless, flammable liquid with a distinctive alcoholic odour similar to that of ethanol (potable alcohol).[17] A polar solvent, methanol acquired the name wood alcohol because it was once produced chiefly by the destructive distillation of wood. Today, methanol is mainly produced industrially by hydrogenation of carbon monoxide.
- High purity: Typically 99.9% pure.
- Colorless: Clear, transparent liquid.
- Solubility: Miscible with water and organic solvents.
- Volatility: Low boiling point (64.7°C).
- Safety: Flammable, toxic, requires careful handling.
